The 2009 Brewers passed away on Tuesday, July 28, at Miller Park. The season was 100 games old. They are survived by National League Central counterparts Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros.

In lieu of flowers, team fans have requested that you throw your Brewers memorabilia in the garbage.

The 2009 Brewers were born with high expectations after the 2008 edition reached the postseason for the first time in 473 years, thanks to the New York Mets dropping 39 of their final 40 games down the stretch in a tight Wild Card race. High hopes abounded for 2009, and after a slow start, the Brewers played an extended stretch of hot baseball to take over first place.

But a season-ending injury to second baseman Rickie Weeks and a line drive off the pitching arm of Dave Bush revealed the first signs of sickness. The Brewers embarked on a long slide, culminating with their passing when they allowed 78 runs to the hapless Washington Nationals in back-to-back games at Miller Park.

The 2009 Brewers were mostly a frustrating and worthless team, but they did have some bright moments. On May 22 against the Cincinnati Reds, veteran catcher Jason Kendall hit a fly ball to the warning track, a stunning development that shocked fans and led to Kendall being carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates. Veteran right-hander Jeff Suppan had a bright moment of his own, holding the Milwaukee Pius XI junior varsity girls softball team to just 5 runs on 9 hits over 5 innings in a memorable June 10 outing. Suppan's fastball topped out at a blazing 48 miles per hour in that outing, the best of his tenure as a Brewer. The performance prompted Brewers general manager Doug Melvin to award Suppan an extra $9 million on his contract.

There was even a memorable moment from the announcers' booth when in a game against the Atlanta Braves on May 15, play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson said Corey Hart launched a 2-2 pitch and was proven right when the ball actually cleared the shortstop and landed in the glove of the left fielder only 50 feet shy of the wall.

But the 2009 Brewers suffered some poor moments as well.

In a truly ugly affair, star left fielder Ryan Braun called out the Miller Park beer vendors for being too slow.

"It's frustrating," Braun said. "I mean, I'm out there hitting homers every at-bat, and I'm also really good-looking, and the fans in the stands can't even get drunk enough to boo J.J. Hardy and Carlos Villanueva because the vendors are too slow. I told Doug Melvin to go out and get some Olympic sprinters to serve those fat idiots in the stands. I'd be happy to help if Melvin would let me."

In a quick response, Melvin said he'd love Braun's help, even naming him his "Deputy."

"Why not?" Melvin said. "If I could trade Carlos Lee, a proven All-Star power hitter and get nothing in return, how can one of my players do any worse? I've already got Ryan out on the road scouting such superstars as Jody Gerut, Adam Rosales and Khalil Greene. With guys like Yovani Gallardo and Prince Fielder available to trade, we should be able to land one of those."

The 2009 Brewers pitching staff was the primary cause of their death, according to doctors. The final breath came on July 28 against the Nationals when Villanueva allowed a lead-off home run to Nyjer Morgan, the 2009 Little League Home Run Derby champion, and gave up 17 runs in four innings.

But the offense did little to revitalize the 2009 Brewers. In an unprecedented baseball occurrence, the 2009 Brewers managed to fail to score a runner from third with less than two outs on 172 straight occurrences. Veteran center fielder Mike Cameron had a poor season, going 0-342 with runners on base.

It is not yet known what moves will be made to improve the 2010 Brewers. In a report by ESPN's Ed Werder, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said he was considering the chance of considering the possibility of entertaining the 50/50 chance of unretiring from football and trying out for the Brewers. According to Werder, Favre's brother said Brett was still upset at Cubs general manager Jim Hendry for not letting him sing the seventh-inning stretch in a 2008 Cubs game, and Favre wants to prove to Hendry that he can still succeed in baseball.

"Hey, I know I can get the Brewers into the playoffs," Favre said. "But I sure can single-handedly take them out of the playoffs."
